The Natural reserve of Saint Martin
Blessed with three large ecosystems — the mangrove, the underwater
flowering plant gardens, and the coral reef — the Natural reserve
of Saint Martin houses a rich variety of fauna. Numerous species enjoy this
protected environment, notably hawksbill sea turtles which can be seen in
the transparent waters around Tintamare.
The marine park of the Natural reserve is located on a vast plateau that
extends from the island of Anguilla to Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy.
The depth of this underwater environment rarely exceeds 90 feet. This is
where marine mammals such as large dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and humpback
whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) have established their preferred zone for
hunting and enjoying the warm tropical waters.
Numerous birds of both nesting and migratory species are also present in
numbers. More than 27 species of shorebirds (lesser yellowlegs, plovers)
frequent the humid zones of the Natural reserve. Marine birds, equally numerous,
are essentially found on the steep slopes on the island of Tintamare, and
they often accompany boats between Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy.
The goals of the Natural reserve are primarily to maintain the biodiversity
and flora and fauna potentials of the three existing ecosystems. We are
pleased to welcome you to this privileged environment where nature is flourishing.
We hope that the wonderful natural resources encourage respectful behavior
on the part of our visitors.
